We have recently encountered an incident with below error message in one of the most critical production system, upon analysis, it was found that considerable amount of memory reserved by SQL Memory was trimmed due to lack of physical memory. During the trimming operation, for about 5 minutes, overall SAP system performance was poor and all the end users were having very high response time.

Error Message

A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 368 seconds. Working set (KB): 39476, committed (KB): 16784184, memory utilization: 0%.

Below are the possible solutions for this situation:

  • Install Dynamic Cache Service as mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;976618 and http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9258
  • As per general recommendations from SAP, the file system cache should be set to 7 to 10% of the physical memory.
  • Look at the other processes which are memory intensive and optimize the memory utilization (i.e. Reducing Workprocess, Reducing Buffers (ST02) and Other Memory Areas)
  • In our case, we had an additional dialog instance running on the hardware in which DB is hosted, so we have removed that particular application server from logon group to avoid heavy memory utilization.
